PARLIAMENT PASSES FCRA AMENDMENT BILL; GOVT SAYS BILL NOT AGAINST ANY NGO

The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Bill (FCRA) 2020 passed by the Parliament, puts many question marks on the viability of NGOs at a time when the country especially requires robust civil society organisations and networks to deal with a range of challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Voluntary Action Network India (VANI), an apex body of Indian voluntary organisations, said the amendments assume that all NGOs receiving foreign grants were “guilty unless proved otherwise,” virtually making it impossible for NGOs to function.

Though the MoS Home said the Bill was not against any NGO and is an effort to maintain transparency.
