A 20-year-old Dalit woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras was allegedly gang-raped and assaulted by four men on 14 September, succumbed to her injuries on 29th September. The UP police added insult to the injury by not only delaying the registration of the FIR but also hastily cremating the body in the dead of the night after locking up the girl’s family in a blatant effort to silence the case. According to the woman’s family, the police allegedly arrested all the four accused only after there was a social media outrage in the case.
This case has again put the focus back on crimes against women.
