A five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court struck down the Maharashtra law
granting reservation to the Maratha community in admissions and government jobs in the
state. The Court held that the law violates the principle of equality and by exceeding the
the ceiling of 50 percent, goes against Articles 14 and 15 (right to equality and protection
against discrimination) of the Indian Constitution.
How did this reservation unfold and what happens now?
